Wenshan Baozhong|文山包種

 Tasting notes: Floral, vegetal, creamy
Origin: Pinglin, New Taipei City, Taiwan
 Cultivar: 青心烏龍 Qingxin Oolong

 Elevation: 200-400m
 Oxidation: ⦿⦿○○○

If you’re into Taiwanese oolongs, you have to try Wenshan Baozhong. Quintessentially Taiwanese, it is made from the local 青心 Qingxin cultivar that gives a buttery textured tea with a light milky aroma. Our Wenshan Baozhong comes from a small family farm run by two avid surfers who are building on five generations of tea-making experience. A testament to their skill, this tea has a brightness and natural floral fragrance that is simply unparalleled.

Wenshan Baozhong oolong tea is ever so lightly oxidised—to the point that it’s sometimes regarded as a green tea—and has a slightly grassy or vegetal flavour with a floral aroma and creamy texture.

“Wenshan” 文山 refers to the area that is currently New Taipei City where this tea is almost exclusively grown. “Baozhong” 包種  means “wrapped type”, referring to the traditional way the tea was wrapped in paper to be sold.

You can recognise it by its bluey-green leaves twisted in strips. Throughout processing, the tea leaves are treated with the utmost tenderness, like newborn babies, resulting in a bright, delicate tea.

Gongfu style (Gaiwan)
6g | per 100ml | 95°C | 1 min
+ 10s per steep for at least 5 steeps

Western style (Teapot)
3g | per 100ml | 95°C | 3 mins
+ 1 min per steep for at least 3 steeps

Cold brew

As a general rule, it’s best to avoid boiling water with Wenshan Baozhong tea. You can rinse the tea first to speed up the unfurling process and get a stronger first infusion.

These are just guidelines. As we always say, it’s best to experiment with a range of temperatures and leaf-to-water ratios to understand the tea and your own taste preferences.
