Tieguanyin Red | 韻紅鐵觀音

Tasting notes: Baked fruit, malty, prune
 Origin: Muzha, Taipei, Taiwan
 Cultivar: 紅心歪尾桃 Hongxin Waiweitao (Tieguanyin)

 Elevation: 350m
 Oxidation: ⦿⦿⦿⦿⦿

This is a black tea made from the original Tieguanyin cultivar from Fujian, that was brought over to Taiwan in the 1800s.

While this cultivar is normally reserved for Tieguanyin oolongs, in recent years, tea producers in Muzha, Taiwan started experimenting with black tea processing methods as well, resulting in this highly fragrant and fruity Tieguanyin Red. (What the Western world calls “black tea” is actually 紅茶 hong cha in Chinese, i.e. red tea, named after the colour of the liquor, not the leaves.)

As a black tea, it is fully oxidised, heavily wilted and rolled, and lightly roasted. It gives a beautiful liquor that glows deep red like a jewel. We find it smells a little like sweet potato and has a very smooth and sweet flavour with a fragrant aftertaste.

An extremely rare tea, our Tieguanyin Red is produced only in small quantities during the summer months. It’s even difficult to find in Taiwan, so we’re very pleased to have procured a batch especially and exclusively for our teaCLUB members.

Gongfu style (Gaiwan)
4g | per 100ml | 98°C | 1 min

3g | per 100ml | 98°C | 3 mins
+1 min per steep for at least 2 steeps

Cold brew

These are just guidelines. As we always say, it’s best to experiment with a range of temperatures and leaf-to-water ratios to understand the tea and your own taste preferences.
