"Tuocha" 沱茶 is a traditional Yunnan tea style that dates back to the Ming Dynasty. It refers to Puerh tea that is pressed in a dome or bowl or bird's nest shape. The name is thought to originate from an old tea trading route along the Tuojiang River in China.
Â
These tuocha are made of a 2017 ripe Puerh tea, which is a fully fermented tea popularised in Hong Kong and often enjoyed with dim sum. The raw tea is fermented with microbes for about two weeks in humid room (a process called "wet-piling") then pressed, dried and aged.
Â
Tuocha come in a variety of sizes, but we find the mini 5g ones most convenient, as they are pre-portioned to be a single serving, and are easy to carry around in your pocket or when travelling. Simply pop one into a your teapot, gaiwan or mug, add hot water and enjoy!
