Old Grove Tieguanyin | 正欉鐵觀音

Tasting notes: Ripe fruit, nutty, burnt sugar
 Origin: Muzha, Taipei, Taiwan
 Cultivar: 紅心歪尾桃 (Tieguanyin)
 Elevation: 350m
 Oxidation: ⦿⦿⦿○○
 Heavy roasted

Made from the original Tieguanyin cultivar, this traditionally roasted oolong has a lingering aroma of caramelised fruit.

Why we love it:

  • As a roasted oolong tea, it is robust and sweet, and smells amazing when brewed.
  • It is handcrafted using traditional roasting methods and laboriously rolled into a tight ball shape. This gives the tea a dark amber brew with a molasses flavour.
  • It pairs well with afternoon tea favourites like cakes and scones.

It is called "Old Grove" because it is made from the oldest known Tieguanyin cultivar 紅心歪尾桃 that originated in Quanzhou, Fujian, and was brought over to Taiwan in the 1800s.

As a roasted, balled oolong, Old Grove Tieguanyin does well with temperatures close to boiling. You can rinse the tea first to speed up the unfurling process and get a stronger first infusion.

These are just guidelines. As we always say, it’s best to experiment with a range of temperatures and leaf-to-water ratios to understand the tea and your own taste preferences.
