Longjing (Dragon well) tea is one of China’s most famous green teas with a history that goes back centuries—a tea that was immortalised in the poetry of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing dynasty. Learn more about Longjing tea here.
Guyu Longjing is made of one bud and one to two leaves, harvested later in spring. The higher temperature and more sunlight promote production of tea polyphenols, the compound mainly responsible for the classic bitter taste in tea—which is why the Guyu Longjing exhibits more robust aromas and flavors.
Compared to the Pre-Qingming harvest, the Guyu harvest has longer, greener and more slender leaves. The liquor is smooth and mellow, with a bright savory freshness and a lingering aftertaste (回甘 huigan) that stays in your mouth.
Our Longjing tea comes from a tea farm in Meijiawu, one of the five certified core Longjing production areas around the scenic Xihu Lake in Hangzhou, China. You’ll recognise Longjing tea for its distinctively flat jade-green leaves, shaped during the pan-firing stage which halts oxidation after harvesting. Pan-firing also gives this green tea a nutty aroma with notes of chestnut and roasted beans.
This tea is harvested before Guyu, the last solar term in spring. Guyu Longjing is not considered as premium, but has a strong fanbase. Many veteran tea drinkers prefer it for its fuller body and bolder flavor profile.
